Let’s be honest, it’s national rescue dog and cat day everyday! If we have to pick a day to create adoption awareness May 20th it is. Every year, dog lovers across the country celebrate National Rescue Dog Day, a special day dedicated to countless rescue dogs waiting for loving homes. Beautiful and incredible dogs (cause all dogs are beautiful), whether found in shelters, foster homes, or rescue organizations, have often overcome adversity and are simply looking for a second chance at love and most importantly dog parent(s)!
The Heart Behind National Rescue Dog Day
National Rescue Dog Day was founded by Lisa Wiehebrink, an author and animal advocate, who wanted to shine a light on rescue/shelter dogs in need once she adopted her dog Cooper from a Los Angeles shelter in 2009. Many of these dogs have been abandoned, neglected, or surrendered (at no fault of their own), yet they still have boundless love to give and they are the best dogs to add to your family. This day is an opportunity to celebrate these amazing doggos while encouraging adoption, fostering, and responsible pet ownership. Here is my dog Bear on her gotcha day which was July 14, 2022. She is literally my soul dog, so smart and sweet (a mix breed), I don’t know life without her now.

How National Rescue Dog Day is Celebrated Across the U.S.
While National Rescue Dog Day is recognized nationwide, some states and cities have embraced it in unique and impactful ways:
California: Cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego hold adoption fairs, fundraising events, and awareness campaigns to help connect rescue dogs with forever families.
Texas: Austin, known for its strong commitment to no-kill shelters, sees local rescues and pet organizations hosting adoption drives and social media campaigns to promote the importance of pet adoption.
New York: The state hosts special events, including adoption specials and donation drives, through well-known shelters like the ASPCA and North Shore Animal League.
Florida: Many local humane societies and shelters in Miami, Tampa, and Orlando use this day to promote dog rescue success stories and encourage community members to adopt or foster.
Illinois: Chicago’s numerous rescue groups organize adoption events, pet parades, and educational workshops to spread awareness about rescue dogs and their needs.
Even if your state or city doesn’t have an official event, you can still take part in National Rescue Dog Day by spreading the word, donating to a local shelter, or simply showing appreciation for rescue dogs in your community.
Why Adopt a Rescue Dog?
Adopting a rescue dog doesn’t just change their life, it will definitely change yours too. Here are some reasons why adopting a rescue dog is one of the best decisions you can make:
Unconditional Love: Rescue dogs form deep bonds with their adopters, often showing immense gratitude for their new homes.
Saving a Life: Millions of dogs enter shelters every year, and adoption gives them a second chance.
Variety of Choices: Whether you’re looking for a small, large, young, or senior dog, shelters have dogs of all breeds, personalities, and sizes. Everyone at the shelters or rescues know the dogs and can help match you with a dog that best fits your family and lifestyle.
Helping the Community: Adopting reduces the demand for puppy mills and irresponsible breeders while supporting ethical animal welfare efforts on a national level.
