Taking a road trip with your dog isn’t just about changing scenery; it’s about discovering new ways to bond and create lasting memories. As someone who’s clocked countless miles, Bear, I’m excited to share my top tips and must-haves to ensure your road trip adventure is a blast for both of you. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or planning your first getaway with your doggo, this guide is packed with insights to make your journey as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Again, this blog is all about a road trip with your dog guide.
Know Before You Go
Check-Up Time
A quick vet visit to make sure your dog is travel-ready is a great starting point. Updating their ID tags and making sure their microchip details are current is also key for peace of mind.
What to Pack
Here’s what I never leave without:
- Snacks and Water: Pack more than you think you’ll need. Those collapsible bowls are a lifesaver. Hack: I use recycled plastic with covers. Just add water, cover, and use when you need. Makes ready-to-go water on the road easy.
- Food: Pack their normal food kibble and/or wet food.
- Leash |Collar |Harness: Always without question and highly recommend over cross body leash for extra safety and control.
- Their Favorite Comfort Items: Crate, pillow, mat, toy and/or blanket from home can really help ease travel nerves.
- Pet First Aid Kit: Especially with their meds included.
- Cleanup Gear: Eco-friendly bags for those pit stops.
- Outdoor blanket and towels: Helps with clean up.
On the Road
Plan Ahead and Taking Breaks
Finding pet-friendly spots to stay ahead of time saves a lot of hassle. I’ve found some great places on BringFido. Stopping every couple of hours not only gives your dog a break, but it’s a great excuse for you to stretch your legs too. Maybe map out your stops via dog parks or parks along your road trip journey.
Safety is Key
A good travel crate or harness keeps your dog secure. And remember, as fun as it seems, letting them stick their head out the window can be risky.
Entertainment
A bored dog is an antsy dog. To keep them busy, maybe bringing a new toy or a tasty chew can make a big difference in their mood.
Capture the Moments
Don’t forget to snap some pictures! Your social media friends will love to see your dog’s travel adventures, and they make for some pretty cute keepsakes.
Wrapping It Up
Sure, traveling with your dog means a bit more planning, but the experiences you’ll share are totally worth it. With a little preparation, you’re all set for a journey that’s as enjoyable as the destination itself. Here’s to the open road and the incredible bond between you and your dog. You can find all the items I mentioned above in the related post below.
Happy travels!
